Why is full-tang construction important for Chinese sword designs specifically?
Updated Feb 2026
Chinese sword history includes many construction methods where the tang does not extend through the full handle length. Historical jian and dao often used narrower, shorter tangs because the original assembly methods — resin adhesives, tight wood-to-metal fitting, and specific handle construction techniques — created sufficient structural connection for their intended use. For modern collectors who may display, handle, and occasionally test their swords with different expectations than historical users, full-tang construction provides additional structural confidence. Knowing the steel runs continuously from blade tip through the handle end eliminates any concern about blade-handle separation during handling.
