Chinese and Japanese sword-making share ancient roots but diverged into distinct traditions. Both use forging, folding, and heat treatment, but the specific techniques differ. Chinese jian require symmetrical grinding to maintain the double-edged geometry, a challenge that single-edged katana do not face. Chinese dao forging uses different curvature profiles and balance priorities. Fitting styles are entirely different: Chinese guards, pommels, and handle wrapping follow distinct design conventions. The result is that Chinese swords, while sharing fundamental metalworking principles with Japanese swords, are distinctly different craft products.
