What makes a samurai sword functional versus display-only?
Updated Feb 2026
A functional samurai sword meets several structural requirements that display-only pieces do not. The blade must be forged from high-carbon steel (not stainless) with proper heat treatment to achieve a hard cutting edge and tough spine. Full-tang construction is mandatory — the blade steel extends through the entire handle and is secured with bamboo pins, creating structural unity that can absorb the force of cutting. The blade geometry must have an appropriate edge angle and distal taper for efficient cutting. The handle assembly must be tight and secure, with no play or rattling between the tang and handle core. Display-only swords often use stainless steel, partial tang, and decorative fittings that would fail under cutting stress.
