A functional katana meets structural requirements that decorative pieces do not. The blade must be forged from high-carbon steel with proper heat treatment — not stamped from stainless steel sheet. Full-tang construction is mandatory, meaning the blade extends through the entire handle and is secured with bamboo pins. The blade geometry must have the correct edge angle, distal taper, and curvature for efficient cutting. The handle assembly must be tight and impact-resistant. Decorative katana often use stainless steel, partial tang, and loose fittings that would fail under any cutting stress.
