Which steel is most durable for a functional katana?
Updated Feb 2026
1060 carbon steel is the most durable option for a functional katana. Its moderate carbon content (0.60%) gives it excellent toughness and flexibility, meaning it can absorb off-angle cuts and lateral stress without chipping or cracking. T10 tool steel offers the best combination of durability and edge retention, with tungsten content that improves wear resistance. 1095 high-carbon steel takes the sharpest edge but is slightly more brittle. For beginners, 1060 is the recommended starting steel because of its forgiving nature under imperfect cutting form.
