What is the difference between full-tang and through-tang katana construction?
Updated Feb 2026
All katana swords in our collection use full-tang construction, meaning the blade steel extends through the entire length of the handle as a single continuous piece. This is the traditional and structurally strongest method of katana construction. The tang (nakago) is secured inside the handle with a bamboo mekugi pin that passes through a hole in the tang and both sides of the wooden handle core. Full-tang construction ensures the blade and handle function as a unified structure, distributing stress evenly and preventing loosening over time. Some lower-quality swords on the market use rat-tail tang or welded tang construction, which are structurally inferior. You can verify full-tang construction by checking that the mekugi pin passes through the tang itself.
