Do authentic Japanese katana come with a certificate of authenticity?
Updated Feb 2026
Our hand-forged katana do not come with certificates in the way that antique Japanese swords (nihonto) are certified by organizations like the NBTHK. Those certificates apply specifically to historical blades produced in Japan and evaluated for age, smith attribution, and preservation quality. Our katana are modern production pieces that follow traditional forging techniques and materials — their authenticity is demonstrated by their construction: full-tang carbon steel blades, genuine fittings, and (on premium pieces) clay-tempered hamon lines. Each piece is inspected before shipping to verify construction quality, blade geometry, and fitting assembly. The best way to verify authenticity on any katana is to examine the tang, steel type, and fittings rather than rely on paper documentation.
