How can I tell if a katana is made from real forged steel?
Updated Feb 2026
Several indicators distinguish real forged steel from decorative materials. First, check the blade with a magnet — forged carbon steel is strongly magnetic, while many decorative alloys are weakly magnetic or non-magnetic. Second, examine the tang by looking at the mekugi pin — on a real steel katana, removing the pin reveals a flat, tapered steel tang with file marks and a rough forged surface. Decorative pieces often have thin threaded rods. Third, weight is a reliable indicator — a real steel katana blade has noticeable heft from the dense forged steel, while stainless or alloy blades feel lighter and less balanced. Finally, a forged carbon steel blade will develop a patina over time if not oiled, which stainless steel will not. All of our katana use forged carbon steel and display these characteristics.
