What are the main steel types used in real steel katana?

 Updated Feb 2026

Our collection uses six forged carbon steels. 1045 has 0.45% carbon and provides a durable, low-maintenance blade at the entry level. 1060 has 0.60% carbon and offers the best balance of hardness and flexibility, making it the most versatile option. 1095 has 0.95% carbon and achieves the highest edge hardness, ideal for collectors who prioritize sharpness and hamon definition. T10 tool steel contains tungsten for added wear resistance and is the most popular choice for clay-tempered blades with vivid hamon lines. Manganese steel provides good hardness and corrosion resistance at a mid-range price. Damascus steel is made by folding and welding layers of high-carbon steel, producing visible patterning and a homogeneous internal structure.
