What steel types are used in performance-grade katana swords?

 Updated Feb 2026

This collection uses four high-performance steels. T10 tool steel contains approximately 0.5% tungsten in addition to its high carbon content, which gives it superior wear resistance and excellent edge retention. It is the most popular choice for clay-tempered katana with vivid hamon lines. 1095 high-carbon steel has 0.95% carbon and achieves the highest edge hardness in our lineup, producing an extremely sharp and well-defined cutting edge. 1060 carbon steel with 0.60% carbon provides the best balance of hardness and flexibility, making it the most resilient option for handling. Damascus steel is created by folding and welding multiple layers of carbon steel, resulting in a blade with layered structural integrity and distinctive surface patterning.
