The katana is the most popular starting point for functional-grade collecting. It is the most visually impactful format, the most recognized, and offers the largest display surface to showcase the steel’s characteristics. A T10 or 1095 katana with clay tempering provides an excellent introduction to premium Japanese blade craft. After the katana, adding a wakizashi in the same steel creates a daisho set, which is the most traditional display configuration. A tanto as a third piece completes the set. For collectors on a tighter budget, starting with a tanto allows you to experience premium steel and clay tempering at a lower price point before investing in a full-size katana.
