What is the best way to store a gold full-tang katana when not on display?
Updated Feb 2026
Store the sword horizontally in its saya, edge facing up, on a proper two-peg sword stand. This is the traditional and correct storage posture: edge-up reduces pressure on the saya interior lacquer and is the position a katana is meant to rest in. If you do not have a stand, store it flat on a clean surface with the saya protecting the blade. Keep the storage location away from humidity, direct sunlight, and heat sources. Humidity is the main enemy of carbon steel blades - even with a gold surface treatment, the underlying steel can oxidize if exposed to persistent moisture. Before storing for an extended period, wipe the blade clean with a soft cloth and apply a very thin protective oil coat. Check the blade every few months during storage: if any light rust spots have appeared despite the oil, address them promptly with a soft cloth and uchiko powder before they develop further. With these habits, the sword stores safely and comes out of storage in good condition each time.
