Is the gold finish on these katana durable enough for regular handling?
Updated Feb 2026
The gold surface finish is durable under normal collectible handling - that is, drawing and re-sheathing for examination, cleaning, and display adjustments. It is not intended for contact with hard surfaces or abrasive materials, and repeated friction against the same spot will eventually show wear. The practical implication is that normal handling is fine, but the blade should be handled deliberately: draw smoothly rather than quickly, avoid resting the blade on rough surfaces, and use only soft cloths for cleaning. The saya protects the blade during storage and prevents the surface from contacting anything that could cause wear. Under these conditions, the gold finish maintains its appearance reliably for years. If the gold surface ever shows wear at the contact point with the habaki - a common area for any blade finish - this is a cosmetic issue rather than a structural one and does not affect the blade beneath.
