How do I maintain a gold blade without damaging the surface finish?
Updated Feb 2026
Maintenance for a gold-finished blade follows the same basic principles as any carbon steel katana, with a few small adjustments to protect the surface treatment. After handling, wipe the blade with a soft, clean cloth to remove fingerprint oils - these are the primary cause of spotting on both the gold finish and the carbon steel underneath. Use a dry or very lightly oiled cloth rather than a wet one, and apply strokes from base to tip in one direction. For periodic oiling, a minimal amount of choji oil on a soft cloth is appropriate; avoid heavy oil application as excess can pool at the fittings and cause discoloration over time. Do not use abrasive polishing compounds or harsh cleaning agents on a treated blade, as these will remove the surface finish. Store the sword in its saya when not on display, and keep it away from high-humidity environments. With this level of care the gold finish maintains its appearance reliably.
