How long does the gold finish last on a full-tang katana with regular care?
Updated Feb 2026
With proper care, the gold finish on a full-tang katana maintains its appearance reliably for many years. The finish is a surface treatment applied to carbon steel, not a thick coating, so it is subject to gradual wear at high-contact points - particularly around the habaki seat and anywhere the blade contacts the saya mouth during drawing and re-sheathing. This wear is normal and cosmetic rather than a structural issue. The rate of wear is largely determined by how frequently the sword is drawn and examined. A sword that is displayed without regular drawing will maintain its finish much longer than one that is handled daily. Avoiding abrasive materials, harsh cleaning agents, and excessive moisture are the primary maintenance factors. Soft-cloth wiping after handling and periodic light oiling are sufficient to protect both the finish and the carbon steel underneath. With this routine, the finish holds its visual quality through years of normal display ownership.
