What surface depth is needed to place a katana table stand on a desk or shelf?
Updated Feb 2026
A katana table stand base requires approximately 20 to 25 centimeters of surface depth. The swords displayed on the stand extend well beyond this in both directions along the sword's length - a standard katana in saya is 100 to 115 centimeters long - but the stand base itself needs only the 20 to 25 centimeter depth to sit stably on the surface. For a desk placement, position the stand so the sword runs parallel to the desk edge rather than perpendicular to it, which keeps the sword within the desk's surface area rather than overhanging into the room. Standard office desks at 60 to 70 centimeters deep have enough surface depth for the stand with room to spare. For shelf placement, a shelf of 25 to 30 centimeters depth accommodates the stand base comfortably with the sword extending to either side along the shelf length.
