How do I properly draw and handle an authentic samurai katana?
Updated Feb 2026
Handling an authentic samurai katana properly respects both the piece as a collectible and the safety of everyone nearby. When drawing the katana, hold the scabbard in the left hand with the edge facing upward - the traditional orientation that protects the edge of the blade and the interior of the scabbard. Use the right hand to draw the blade smoothly and steadily, keeping control of both the blade and the scabbard throughout the draw. Never draw or hold a katana with the edge facing toward yourself or others. When examining the blade, tilt it to catch the light along the flat to reveal the hamon and blade surface - avoid touching the blade surface with bare fingers as skin oils accelerate oxidation on high-carbon steel. When returning the blade to the scabbard, use the left hand to guide the habaki onto the scabbard opening and slide smoothly, rather than forcing the blade. After any handling, wipe the blade surface with a soft cloth to remove moisture and fingerprints before re-sheathing, then apply a light oil coat for storage protection.
