Why are aluminum blades used for practice samurai swords?
Updated Feb 2026
Aluminum blades are used for practice samurai swords because the material provides a good balance of the physical properties needed for sword training without the safety risks of carbon steel edges. Aluminum is light enough that an aluminum blade katana has a total weight comparable to a carbon steel sword of the same dimensions, providing similar movement inertia and wrist feedback during kata practice. Aluminum can be manufactured to the correct blade geometry without heat treatment, making production consistent. Most importantly, aluminum practice blades are unsharpened and remain unsharpened - aluminum cannot be sharpened to a cutting edge the way steel can, which makes it inherently safer for training scenarios where student contact or accidental blade contact is possible. For schools, dojos, and introductory training environments, aluminum practice swords are the standard choice.
