How should I store and maintain an aikuchi collectible long-term?
Updated Feb 2026
High-carbon steel like T10 requires consistent maintenance to preserve its finish and hamon clarity. Apply a thin coat of choji oil (or a neutral mineral oil) to the blade every two to three months, or more frequently in humid climates. Store the sword horizontally in its saya, edge facing up in the traditional orientation, away from direct sunlight and heat sources that could stress the lacquer finish. Avoid storing it in sealed leather cases for extended periods, as trapped moisture accelerates oxidation. If white powder (uchiko) maintenance is practiced, use it sparingly — excessive abrasion removes the fine surface polish that makes the hamon visible. The piano lacquer saya should be wiped with a dry soft cloth; no solvents or polishes are needed or recommended. Handled and stored correctly, a properly forged T10 collectible will maintain its appearance for decades.
