Iaito - the Japanese term for an unsharpened practice sword - describes both a tradition and a practical decision. The tradition: building draw technique and sword-handling with a full-weight, full-length sword that replicates the feel of a live blade. The practical decision: doing so without the edge maintenance, storage requirements, and handling restrictions that a live edge demands. This aluminum iaito delivers both at 41 inches and 2.0 lbs.

The brown blade finish is the defining visual feature. Where most practice swords default to silver-polished or black-anodized aluminum, the brown finish suggests patina - the color that develops on aged steel over time. For cosplay or stage performance, the brown blade reads as weathered or antique, adding a dimension of character that a mirror-polished piece doesn't carry. For daily practice, the finish is durable and handles draw repetitions without issue.

The fittings follow traditional iaito construction: iron tsuba, cord handle wrapped over black ray-skin (samegawa). The weight and handle geometry are calibrated to match the grip and balance of a live katana, so the muscle memory developed through daily practice with this piece directly transfers. The blade is aluminum and unsharpened, which is exactly what makes it appropriate for the contexts it's designed for.

Both swords are good quality and well crafted. Shipping took a little longer than expected but I am happy with my purchase.

overall experience:
website is easy to use, has an extremely wide selection, and explanations for different product types. i was a bit skeptical of the advertisements and customer reviews, but TrueKatana is legit. every sword they advertise is exactly how it appears when delivered; these swords are great for cosplay and iaido/iaijustu.

for sharp, “battle-ready” swords, they are reviewed to not be the sharpest or most effective for regular sharp use. however you’re better off spending more for a better piece that will last longer because TrueKatana is more for display anyways

my personal order: i ordered an aluminum non-sharp katana for practice and display; it’s a solid piece that is assembled with nice quality. would order again if ever interested in a second one. i was able to track my order as well all throughout the process

TL;DR: very honest advertisement for nice blades at reasonable prices. you get what you order. but don’t expect an amazing cutting/sharp sword; spend more money on a better sword for those purposes
