Frequently Asked Questions

What defines a ninjato compared to a katana?
A ninjato is distinguished primarily by its straight or minimally curved blade geometry, in contrast to the pronounced curvature of a katana. The ninjato also typically features a shorter blade length and a square or simply shaped tsuba, giving it a more utilitarian visual profile. From a collector's standpoint, this straight silhouette creates a noticeably different display presence - clean, linear, and architecturally bold. The chokuto variants in this collection take the straight-blade concept even further, referencing a pre-Heian Japanese sword form that predates the curved blade's dominance in Japanese smithing tradition.
What is the difference between 1095 carbon steel and manganese steel in these pieces?
1095 high-carbon steel contains roughly 0.95% carbon, making it a classic choice for hand-forged collectible blades - it holds a polished or treated surface finish well and develops a satisfying heft that collectors can feel immediately. Manganese steel, by contrast, incorporates manganese as a key alloying element, which increases toughness and resistance to surface wear. For display purposes, both materials produce excellent results; 1095 tends to show finer polish characteristics and responds well to traditional blade care routines, while manganese steel offers a slightly more resilient surface. Neither is superior in an absolute sense - the right choice depends on whether you prioritize traditional metallurgical character or enhanced surface durability in your display piece.
How is the black blade finish achieved on these ninjato?
The black blade finish seen on several pieces in this collection is produced through either a controlled oxidation process or a specialized coating applied after forging and grinding. The result is a matte-to-satin surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it - creating a dramatic visual contrast against gold-accented fittings and lacquered saya. Unlike a raw polished steel finish, a black blade requires slightly more attentive care: avoid abrasive contact that could scratch or wear through the surface treatment, and apply a light coat of choji or mineral oil periodically to maintain the finish and prevent any underlying steel from developing rust.
How should I care for a lacquered hardwood saya long-term?
Lacquered hardwood saya are sensitive to two primary environmental threats: humidity fluctuations and UV exposure. Excessive moisture can cause the wood substrate to swell, potentially cracking the lacquer finish, while prolonged direct sunlight will bleach and dull even high-quality urushi-style lacquer over time. Store your piece in a stable interior environment, ideally between 40-60% relative humidity. Avoid placing it near windows, fireplaces, or air conditioning vents. If the saya surface begins to look dull, a very light application of Renaissance Wax or a specialist lacquer preservative can revive the sheen without damaging the finish. Never use solvent-based polishes on lacquered surfaces.
Are these ninjato good display gifts for sword collectors?
The gold and black saya ninjato pieces in this collection make particularly strong display gifts for collectors who already own curved-blade Japanese swords, since the straight-blade format adds genuine variety to an existing display. The visual drama of the gold-black color combination also means these pieces present well without requiring elaborate display hardware - a simple wall mount or horizontal stand lets the saya detailing speak for itself. For gifting purposes, the dragon tsuba variants offer an additional narrative element that enthusiasts appreciate, as the dragon motif carries deep symbolic weight in Japanese decorative tradition, representing strength, wisdom, and protection.

Features: very heavy and not so sharp, no I didn't plan to cut the heads with it, only for cosplay, but if I would find something attractive as this with T10 steel, I'd rather prefer it.

Honestly, I was a bit skeptical as this was my first time ordering from True Katana. I could not be happier with the purchase.

The quality exceeded my expectations for the price. I constantly want to hold the sword because it just feels right.

It shipped incredibly quick and came ahead of the projections.

I will be buying another sword...the question is which one as there are so many beautiful designs to choose from.

I’m honestly very happy about my order the sword has incredible detail and the overall design is amazing for the price. You won’t regret buying this sword trust me this is a well designed and crafted sword in all aspects. Wish it was a bit sharper so I can cut through things a bit easier but I’m fairly certain theres some legal things that don’t allow the seller to do that, but regardless amazing product and amazing craftsmanship.
