Frequently Asked Questions

What peg spacing works best for displaying a standard katana on a display stand?
The optimal peg spacing for a standard katana display stand positions two support points at locations that keep the sword balanced and level in its horizontal position. The first peg typically sits near the habaki end of the saya - approximately 10 to 15 centimeters from the koiguchi - where the blade base provides the heaviest section of the assembly. The second peg sits near the mid-to-lower section of the saya, approximately 50 to 60 centimeters from the first peg, supporting the lighter portion of the sword. This two-point support system keeps the sword level without creating pressure at any single contact point. The exact positions that produce a level sword depend on the individual sword's balance point, which varies by blade length, blade thickness, and handle materials. Standard katana in the 100 to 110 centimeter overall range have balance points that are reliably supported by the peg spacing used in these stands. Shorter swords like wakizashi may tip slightly if only the outer peg positions are available, in which case centering the sword over the pegs resolves the issue.
How does a katana display stand compare to a dedicated sword display case?
A katana display stand and a sword display case serve the same sword but create very different display experiences. An open stand presents the sword without barriers - you can see it clearly from any angle, reach out and pick it up without opening anything, and the sword exists in the same air space as the room around it. This openness is the best format for a sword you interact with regularly - for examination, maintenance, or simply appreciating it up close. A display case encloses the sword in a glass-fronted or glass-topped enclosure that protects it from dust, humidity variation, and accidental contact. The case is the better choice for long-term preservation of a valuable piece or for display in a household where access needs to be controlled. The trade-off is that glass creates a visual distance between the sword and the viewer that does not exist with an open stand. Many collectors use both formats: an open stand for their most actively appreciated piece and a closed case for pieces they are preserving long-term.
Does a katana display stand need any assembly before use?
The katana display stands in this collection require minimal or no assembly before use. Single-tier models typically arrive as a complete unit requiring only unboxing and placement. Multi-tier models may require fitting the tier brackets onto the base column and securing with hand-tightened hardware - a process that takes a few minutes without tools. The assembly is designed to be self-explanatory, and brief assembly instructions are included where any steps are involved. After assembly, check that all tiers are level by placing a small spirit level across the pegs of each tier before placing any swords. If a tier is not quite level, minor adjustment of the bracket position on the column corrects it. Once assembled and verified level, the stand requires no further adjustment under normal use. For collectors who prefer not to deal with any assembly, single-tier models are the straightforward option - they are complete as delivered and ready to use immediately after unboxing.
What is the maximum blade length that fits on a standard katana display stand?
Standard katana display stands in this collection are sized for swords with an overall length in saya of up to approximately 110 to 115 centimeters. This covers the full range of standard katana including those on the longer end of the typical production range. Swords longer than this - notably tachi with blade lengths over 70 centimeters and odachi of any size - will extend beyond the peg span and may not be adequately supported depending on the specific stand. The peg-to-peg span on these stands is approximately 50 to 60 centimeters, which supports swords of standard katana length at the correct balance points. A longer sword may have its tip unsupported if the blade extends significantly past the outer peg. For displaying tachi or odachi, wall-mount brackets with adjustable positioning or a floor stand designed for longer swords provides better support. For standard katana in the typical production length range, the stands in this collection provide correct and stable support without any adaptation.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
