Frequently Asked Questions

What types of swords require a heavy floor stand rather than a standard table stand?
A heavy floor stand is appropriate for swords that exceed the weight, length, or display format of a standard katana table stand. By weight, swords over approximately 2 kilograms in saya may benefit from a more robust display structure, though most standard stands handle up to 1.5 kilograms per tier without issue. By length, swords significantly longer than 115 centimeters overall - including tachi at 120 to 130 centimeters, odachi at 130 to 160 centimeters, and nodachi at even greater lengths - extend beyond the peg span of a standard katana stand and require a wider or vertical display format. The floor stand's vertical format is particularly appropriate for odachi and nodachi, whose length makes vertical display more practical than horizontal in most home display spaces. Beyond Japanese sword types, very large Chinese dao and other long Asian sword formats may also be better suited to a floor stand than a table display.
How is a vertical floor stand ballasted to hold a long sword safely upright?
A vertical floor stand keeps a long sword upright through a combination of base weight and the geometry of the support structure. The base is weighted - either through solid wood mass or through a broad footprint that distributes the sword's weight and the stand's own weight over a wide area. The sword rests in the stand's upper support fitting with the tip upward and the handle in or near the base fitting, creating a stable vertical column. The key to stability in a vertical floor stand is the relationship between the base width and the height of the sword above the base: the taller the sword relative to the base width, the more susceptible the assembly is to tipping under lateral force. A well-designed floor stand uses a base width proportioned to the height and weight of the swords it is intended to hold. For odachi and nodachi, the base needs to be substantially wider than for a standard katana to provide equivalent lateral stability.
Can a heavy sword stand be used for multiple swords simultaneously?
The vertical floor stand format in this collection is designed for single-sword display - one sword held upright in a single stand. Displaying multiple long or heavy swords simultaneously requires either multiple floor stands placed side by side or a wall-mount system with brackets sized for the specific sword length and weight. Multiple floor stands in a row can create a striking vertical display arrangement for a collection of odachi or long tachi, with each stand holding one sword upright and the stands spaced to allow viewing of each sword independently. This format requires adequate floor space and ceiling clearance for the full sword length, but it produces a dramatic display impact that horizontal stands cannot replicate for long swords. For collectors who display both standard katana and long swords in the same space, combining horizontal table stands for the katana with vertical floor stands for the long swords creates visual variety that emphasizes the different character of each sword type.
What floor surface works best under a heavy sword floor stand?
A heavy sword floor stand works best on a hard, level floor surface - hardwood, tile, or stone - where the stand base makes full contact with the surface and has enough friction to prevent sliding. Soft surfaces like carpet can compress unevenly under the stand base, causing slight tilts that affect the sword's vertical position over time. If you are placing the stand on carpet, check that it sits level using a spirit level and adjust the base position if needed. On hard floors, use non-slip furniture pads under the base corners to prevent the stand from sliding during the sword removal and placement routine. Avoid positioning a vertical floor stand on any surface with a slope or near a sloped transition such as a doorway threshold. The stand should sit perfectly level to keep the sword in a true vertical position. In households with children or pets, additional securing of the base with museum putty or a floor anchor provides a safety margin against the stand being knocked over from the side.

Two very elegant sword stands - photo shows the double but the single is also excellent. Both pieces are simply constructed of very pleasing wood, assembly was easy and took only a minute or two. I am very happy with both these pieces and would recommend them. They may have been designed for katana, but I use them exclusively for Chinese dao and jian swords, and they are perfect for these.

The stand looked great. It was sturdy. However, it was a bit hard to assemble. The grooves in the wood were not cut properly. I ended up having to sand the grooves by hand in order to fit the pieces into the grooves.
