These Samurai swords in this carbon steel category come in a variety of carbon steels. Carbon steel is made up of 3 types, low, medium, and high. The differences are in the amount of carbon steel that is added to the other alloys. The 1045 carbon steel has a carbon content of 0.45% great for taking abuse. The 1055 carbon steel is content between 0.60% and 0.90% has a great resistance to damage. The 1065 hhe carbon content is between 0.60% and 0.65%and used for battle ready swords. I admittedly bought this sword and its shorter companion with the intention of cannibalizing their koshirae to be put on another blade, so I wasn't particularly concerned with the utility of the sword. However, I'll admit that when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised by it. The construction seems pretty tight, the blade while flat ground and through tempered has a pretty good geometry and feels solid. For the money I gotta say this is a really good buy.
