How should I maintain a 1045 carbon steel display blade?

 Updated Feb 2026

Carbon steel requires slightly more attention than stainless, but the routine is straightforward. After any handling, wipe the blade with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprint oils, which are the primary cause of surface spotting on carbon steel over time. Every two to three months - or more frequently in humid climates - apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or a food-grade mineral oil along the flat of the blade using a soft cloth, then buff away any excess. Store the piece in its scabbard when not on display, as the wood interior provides a degree of moisture regulation. Avoid storing in sealed plastic cases without desiccant, as trapped humidity accelerates oxidation on carbon steel surfaces.
