How should I maintain and store this carbon steel collectible?
Updated Mar 2026
Carbon steel requires more active care than stainless steel because it is susceptible to surface oxidation when exposed to humidity and fingerprint oils. For display upkeep, wipe the blade down with a soft silicone cloth after any handling. Every few months, apply a very light coat of choji oil or mineral oil along the flat of the blade to create a thin protective barrier. Store the sword in its saya when not on open display, and avoid placing it in areas with significant humidity fluctuation - near windows, exterior walls, or HVAC vents. If storing long-term, consider a padded sword bag with a silica gel packet to manage ambient moisture without direct contact with the blade.
