How should I oil and store a 1095 high-carbon collectible katana?
Updated Mar 2026
1095 high-carbon steel is more reactive to moisture than stainless steel, so a consistent maintenance routine is important for long-term display quality. Apply a thin, even coat of choji oil or high-purity mineral oil to the blade surface every two to three months using a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid fingerprints on the polished surface - skin oils are mildly acidic and can initiate surface oxidation over time. Store the katana horizontally on a dedicated stand, edge facing upward, in a climate-stable environment away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations. Periodically remove the blade from the saya to check that no moisture is trapped near the habaki collar, as that area is particularly susceptible to localized surface reaction.
