How should I store a folded steel sword to prevent rust on the blade?

 Updated Mar 2026

The single most effective step is a light application of choji oil — a traditional Japanese mineral oil blend — wiped evenly across the entire blade surface with a soft, lint-free cloth every two to three months. If choji oil is unavailable, food-grade mineral oil is an acceptable substitute. Store the sword horizontally on a wooden stand or in a fabric-lined case rather than in a sealed synthetic bag, which can trap moisture against the steel. Avoid environments with large temperature swings, such as garages or unheated storage spaces, as condensation is the most common cause of surface rust on display pieces. If your storage area tends toward high humidity, a small silica gel packet near the sword provides inexpensive insurance without any contact with the blade itself.
