What steel is closest to what original WWII Shin Gunto blades used?

 Updated Mar 2026

Original Shin Gunto blades were produced from a range of Japanese military steel grades - most notably Tamahagane for officer swords made by trained smiths, and various mass-production carbon steels for NCO and late-war issue blades. Among modern replica steels, T10 tool steel with clay tempering most closely approximates the surface behavior and hamon characteristics of hand-forged Japanese blades, producing a visible temper line and differential hardness between edge and spine. High-carbon grades like 1095 also deliver comparable grain structure and edge character. For collectors focused on historical fidelity in how the blade looks and presents rather than metallurgical identity, T10 clay-tempered or 1095 with a genuine hamon are the most authentic-feeling choices available today.
