How should I care for the black lacquer saya on a display wakizashi?
Updated Mar 2026
Black lacquer sayas — whether standard or piano lacquer finish — require straightforward but consistent care to preserve their appearance. Avoid storing the saya in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as prolonged exposure can cause the lacquer surface to cloud, crack, or lose its depth over time. For cleaning, a soft dry cloth is sufficient for surface dust; avoid liquid cleaners or abrasive materials entirely. When the wakizashi is stored for extended periods, remove the blade periodically to ensure no moisture has been trapped inside the saya, which could affect both the lacquer interior and the blade finish. The steel itself should be wiped with a lightly oiled cloth — choji oil is traditional, though food-grade mineral oil works well — to prevent surface oxidation. Keep the assembled piece in a low-humidity environment, ideally with a silica gel pack nearby if storage is in an enclosed cabinet.
