Are small fixed tanto genuinely hand-forged, or are they simplified at this compact scale?
Updated Feb 2026
Small fixed tanto in our collection are genuinely hand-forged using the same fundamental processes as full-size swords. The smith heats carbon steel and individually forge-shapes the blade, applies heat treatment for proper hardness, and finishes the edge through sharpening stages. The handle is assembled with traditional materials including ray skin and cord wrapping, and fittings are individually finished. The compact dimensions do simplify some aspects of construction — a smaller blade is easier to heat-treat uniformly, and the shorter handle requires less wrapping — but these are simplifications of scale rather than quality. The fundamental craftsmanship remains identical. One advantage of compact scale is actually increased quality visibility: at arm’s length, you can see forging details that are only visible with magnification on full-size blades.
