What steels are typically associated with military-era katana, and how do our reproductions reflect
Updated Feb 2026
Historical military-era katana used a range of steels depending on production method and period. Hand-forged officers’ blades used traditional high-carbon steels comparable to tamahagane, processed through conventional forging and heat treatment. Machine-produced blades used standardized industrial steels. Our military-style katana use premium modern steels — T10, 1095, and spring steel — that achieve performance levels meeting or exceeding historical military-grade blades while offering the consistency and reliability of controlled modern steelmaking. T10 is particularly appropriate for military-style pieces because its toughness and edge retention align with the functional demands that military use historically placed on these swords. Spring steel is also well-suited, reflecting the durability emphasis of military blade requirements.
