What is a chokuto, and how does it predate the katana?
Updated Feb 2026
The chokuto is Japan’s earliest sword form, used from roughly the 3rd through 9th centuries before the curved katana became dominant. Chokuto were straight, single-edged blades influenced by Chinese and Korean sword designs that reached Japan through continental trade and cultural exchange. They were the standard Japanese military sword for centuries before Japanese swordsmiths developed the differential heat treatment techniques that naturally produce blade curvature, giving birth to the curved tachi and eventually the katana. The chokuto represents Japanese blade making before it developed its own distinctive character, making it essential context for understanding how the katana’s iconic curve came to be.
