What makes T10 steel special compared to other carbon steels for tanto?

 Updated Feb 2026

T10’s tungsten content (approximately 0.35%) sets it apart from plain carbon steels in several ways. Tungsten increases the steel’s resistance to abrasive wear, meaning the edge maintains its geometry longer during use. Tungsten also refines the grain structure during heat treatment, producing a more uniform and slightly tougher blade. T10 responds exceptionally well to clay tempering, producing clear, well-defined hamon temper lines with active visual character. And T10 has slightly better corrosion resistance than pure carbon steels like 1095, though it still requires regular oiling. This combination of enhanced performance characteristics without significant drawbacks makes T10 the most recommended premium steel for collectors seeking balanced excellence.
