What are the main types of traditional Chinese swords?
Updated Feb 2026
The two primary types are the jian and the dao. The jian is a double-edged straight sword associated with scholars, nobility, and martial arts — often called the gentleman’s weapon. Its straight, symmetrical blade reflects principles of balance and refinement. The dao is a single-edged curved saber used extensively as a military weapon across Chinese dynasties. Its curved blade is optimized for powerful cutting strikes. Other Chinese sword types include the dadao (large saber), the liuyedao (willow-leaf saber), and various regional variants. Each reflects different military needs, cultural values, and technical traditions.
