How should I maintain a real high-carbon steel samurai katana?

 Updated Feb 2026

High-carbon steel requires regular but simple maintenance to stay in display condition. Apply a thin coat of choji oil (clove-infused mineral oil) to the blade surface every two to three months using a soft cotton cloth. In humid climates, oil more frequently. Always handle the blade with a clean cloth rather than bare hands, as fingerprint moisture and salts can cause localized oxidation within hours on unprotected steel. Store the katana in its saya on a horizontal stand in a dry room. Check the mekugi pin periodically to ensure the handle remains secure. If surface spots appear, a gentle wipe with an oiled cloth will remove them before they set in.
