How do I care for an authentic Japanese sword long-term?
Updated Feb 2026
Long-term care involves three simple practices. First, oil the blade every two to three months with choji oil (clove-infused mineral oil) to prevent oxidation on the carbon steel surface. Apply a thin layer with a soft cloth, covering the entire blade. Second, handle the sword by the grip only and avoid touching the blade with bare fingers, as skin oils and salts accelerate corrosion. Third, store and display the sword in a low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight. The saya protects the blade when stored, and a horizontal sword stand keeps the piece accessible while preventing the saya from rolling or sustaining impact damage. With this routine, an authentic Japanese sword will maintain its condition for generations.
