Does Damascus steel require special maintenance?

 Updated Feb 2026

The basic routine is the same as any carbon steel blade: apply choji oil every two to three months, avoid bare-hand contact, and store in a dry environment. The one additional consideration is that the etched surface pattern can fade over time if the blade is over-oiled or exposed to alkaline substances. To maintain pattern contrast, use only a thin oil layer and avoid cleaning products that could alter the acid etch. If the pattern does fade, a professional sword polisher can re-etch the surface to restore the layered contrast. Regular care keeps Damascus steel in excellent display condition for decades.
