What is the Sandai Kitetsu and what is its significance in One Piece?
Updated Feb 2026
The Sandai Kitetsu is the third and lowest grade in the Kitetsu lineage of cursed swords in One Piece. The Kitetsu swords - Shodai, Nidai, and Sandai - are a family of blades described in the story as being exceptionally well-made and sharp but cursed to bring misfortune and death to every owner who has ever carried them. The Sandai Kitetsu is the one Roronoa Zoro acquires in the Loguetown arc, in a scene where he deliberately tests the curse by throwing the sword in the air above his outstretched arm. When the blade lands harmlessly beside him, Zoro takes it as confirmation that his own luck will overcome the curse. The sword stays in Zoro's possession through most of the series, becoming one of his primary blades and the one most associated with his reputation as a fearless and unconventional swordsman. In One Piece power scaling, the Sandai Kitetsu is described as a Ryo Wazamono grade blade - a great grade sword - despite being the lowest tier in the Kitetsu family.
