How should a T10 tanto be stored to preserve the hamon and blade finish?
Updated Feb 2026
A T10 tanto should be stored in its saya - the wooden scabbard - in the horizontal edge-up position when not on display. The saya protects the blade from dust, incidental contact, and humidity variation that can cause surface oxidation on bare carbon steel. Before storage, ensure the blade is clean and lightly coated with choji or mineral oil - a thin protective layer that prevents atmospheric moisture from reaching the steel surface during storage. Do not store the tanto in a leather case or any enclosure made of materials that can trap moisture against the blade. Leather contains acids that accelerate carbon steel oxidation over time. A wooden box, the original saya, or a clean cloth sword bag are appropriate storage materials. The hamon line itself is not affected by storage conditions in the way a surface finish might be - it is a structural feature of the steel rather than a surface treatment. However, heavy oxidation on the blade surface can obscure the hamon line, which is why keeping the blade clean and lightly oiled is important for maintaining the visual clarity of the hamon.
