Why is full-tang construction specifically important for a shirasaya sword?
Updated Feb 2026
Full-tang construction is particularly important to verify in a shirasaya sword because the plain wood handle conceals the blade tang completely - the handle's minimalist design gives no external visual markers of the tang construction quality. In a standard decorated katana, the mekugi pins are visible through the handle wrapping and can be observed directly. In a shirasaya, the plain wood handle covers the tang assembly entirely. Full-tang confirmation means the blade steel extends through the complete plain wood handle rather than ending in a short partial tang that leaves most of the handle as hollow or poorly supported wood. For collectors, a full tang shirasaya is a genuine blade collectible in a plain housing; a partial tang shirasaya in plain housing has no construction quality advantage over a decorative prop.
