How should a practice naginata be stored and maintained safely?
Updated Feb 2026
A practice naginata requires storage planning that accounts for its significantly greater length compared to standard swords. Store vertically in a wall-mounted rack or stand with adequate height clearance, or horizontally in a long horizontal bracket arrangement. The blade should be properly oiled before storage - apply camellia or mineral oil to the complete blade surface after wiping clean, then store in the scabbard if one is included. For pieces without a fitted scabbard, cover the blade with a clean cloth. The pole should be kept away from extreme humidity that causes wood to warp and crack. Never store the naginata leaning against a wall at an angle - this puts stress on the pole that can cause a gradual bend over time. Inspect the blade-to-pole connection periodically for any loosening of the retention fitting.
