How should I store a straight tanto for long-term display?
Updated Feb 2026
Store the tanto horizontally in its saya, ideally in a climate-stable environment away from direct sunlight and heating vents. UV exposure yellows lacquer finishes over time, and repeated humidity swings cause both the lacquered saya and the wooden handle components to expand and contract in ways that eventually lead to checking or loosening of fittings. Apply a thin film of choji oil or neutral mineral oil to the blade every three to four months using a soft lint-free cloth, then wipe away any excess — you want a protective film, not a visible coating. Avoid storing the piece in an airtight display case without any desiccant, as trapped moisture is more damaging than normal ambient air circulation.
