How should I maintain a lacquered saya between displays?
Updated Feb 2026
Piano lacquer saya are durable but benefit from a few simple habits. Keep the saya away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can cause the lacquer to yellow or develop fine checking lines over time. Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints and dust after handling — avoid abrasive cloths or solvent-based cleaners that can dull the gloss finish. For the blade itself, apply a light coat of choji oil (or a quality mineral oil formulated for high-carbon steel) every few months if the piece is on open display, or before storing it in the saya long-term. Moisture is the primary enemy of carbon steel, so a climate-controlled display environment with stable humidity is the single most effective protective measure a collector can take.
