Product Details
This hamidashi tanto features a manganese steel blade. The tempering process produces a visible hamon line that runs along the edge, while the flat of the blade carries deeply engraved geometric patterns in a repeating labyrinth motif. The result is a blade with a hard cutting edge and a resilient spine, finished in a polished chrome tone that contrasts sharply against the carved texture.
The handle is carved from a single piece of natural rosewood, shaped with organic contours that fit the palm comfortably. A small mekugi pin secures the full-tang construction, and polished silver-tone alloy collars cap both ends of the tsuka, providing clean transitions between wood and metal. The warm reddish-brown grain of the rosewood gives each handle a one-of-a-kind character.
At the guard position sits a compact alloy tsuba in an antiqued brass tone, true to the hamidashi style where the guard barely extends beyond the handle width. A black lacquered habaki wedge locks the blade firmly into the saya, ensuring a snug and rattle-free fit when sheathed.
The saya is crafted from brown hardwood with a smooth matte finish, accented by a section of tightly wound copper-tone cord near the opening. This wrapping detail echoes the warm palette of the handle while adding textural interest. The saya's interior is fitted to the blade profile for a precise draw and return. At 20 inches in overall length and 2 lbs in weight, this tanto is a compact and well-proportioned piece suited for shelf display or as a focused addition to a Japanese Tanto Blade collection. The combination of clay tempered T10 steel, natural rosewood, and restrained metalwork gives it a grounded, traditional presence without excess ornamentation.
