Product Details

This black katana starts with a T10 carbon steel blade that has been folded and clay tempered to achieve a genuine hamon - the wavy temper line visible along the edge where differential hardening meets softer spine steel. The folding process creates subtle grain patterns across the blade surface, while the hand-finished edge delivers clean geometry from spine to tip. As part of the T10 Samurai Sword collection, this piece showcases what dedicated forge work can produce in high-carbon steel.

The 11-inch tsuka is built on a hardwood core wrapped first in black PU samegawa for texture, then bound tightly with black cord in a traditional crosshatch pattern. Black menuki sit beneath the wrap, and the overall grip feel is firm and well-seated against the tang, which runs the full length of the handle in a proper full tang construction.

At the junction of blade and handle sits a round copper tsuba featuring a highly detailed dragon motif in raised relief. The dragon winds through the guard with gold-tone accenting on the scales and surrounding lattice pattern, adding a bold focal point to the sword's profile. This piece fits naturally among the Dragon Katana collection for anyone drawn to this iconic Japanese symbol.

The saya is crafted from hardwood and coated in a deep, glossy black natural lacquer that catches light with a mirror-like sheen. Gold kanji characters are inscribed along the body of the scabbard, creating a striking contrast against the black surface. A black sageo cord is tied in a traditional knot at the kurikata, and the koiguchi and kojiri fittings are finished in matching dark tones to complete the monochrome palette.

At 41 inches in overall length and 3 lbs in weight, this katana balances visual impact with authentic proportions. Every element - from the folded and clay tempered blade to the dragon tsuba and kanji-inscribed saya - works together as a cohesive display piece rooted in Japanese sword-making tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and tempering process is used on this katana?
The blade is forged from T10 carbon steel that has been folded and clay tempered. The clay tempering process creates a genuine hamon temper line along the edge, resulting in a harder cutting edge paired with a more flexible spine for structural integrity.
What does the dragon tsuba look like up close?
The round copper tsuba features a three-dimensional dragon in raised relief winding through a lattice framework. Gold-tone accenting highlights the dragon's scales and surrounding pattern, creating a bold visual contrast against the black handle wrap and blade.
What are the kanji characters on the black saya?
The black hardwood saya is finished in glossy natural lacquer with gold kanji characters inscribed along its body. The inscriptions add a traditional calligraphic element that contrasts sharply against the deep black lacquered surface, complemented by a black sageo cord at the kurikata.

I read a few reviews online and debated about ordering, but I am glad I did. For the money, I was very impressed with the overall quality. The blade was ground quite well with a beautiful hamon pattern, the saya (case) fit snugly, and the ito (handle) was wrapped tightly and uniform. Overall, it’s a very nice sword for $300. It will look amazing on display.

This sword is truly impressive. A beautiful piece of art. The hamon was done very well and shows the craftsmanship put into this sword. The sword is nice and tight no rattles. The koiguchi and habaki fit well together. It is snug but not abrasive. Everything was in pristine condition. I recommend Truekatana for anyone
