Product Details

The blade on this tanto is ground from T10 carbon steel and clay-tempered to produce an authentic hamon line that runs the length of the cutting edge. The hardening process creates a visible contrast between the harder edge zone and the softer spine, resulting in a full-tang blade that measures 1.259 inches at the base and carries a hand-finished surface. The chrome-toned nagasa reflects light cleanly, showing the subtle geometry of the tanto profile without unnecessary ornamentation. For collectors interested in exploring the full range of Natural T10 Carbon Steel Tanto options, this piece represents the koshirae-style build at its most visually complete.

The tsuka is built over a hardwood core wrapped first in real white samegawa - the bumpy rayskin texture that prevents the hand from slipping under use. Red cord is wrapped over the rayskin in the traditional diamond-pattern style, with gold-toned menuki seated beneath the wrap. The fuchi and kashira are finished in matching gold hardware, maintaining a unified metal tone from pommel to guard.

The tsuba is cast copper with a dragon theme, finished in gold tones and etched with detailed relief work on both faces. The dragon motif wraps around the oval guard in a posture that mirrors the larger dragon imagery carried on the saya below. A ribbed habaki sits between blade and guard, seating cleanly into the saya throat.

The saya is constructed from hardwood and finished in a deep red piano lacquer that gives the surface a high-gloss, jewel-like depth. A hand-painted dragon scene in white, gold, and teal runs along the body of the saya - detailed enough to show scales, claws, and cloud elements. A black sageo cord is knotted at the kurikata in a traditional tie, with a small dark bead accent at the knot. This is one of the more visually striking entries in the Red Tanto category, where the lacquer work and dragon painting elevate it beyond a standard finish.

Overall length is 21.65 inches. Blade width at base is 1.259 inches, thickness is 0.275 inches, and total weight is 1.54 lb. Shipping weight is 2.2 lb in a 23.6 x 3.9 x 3.5-inch package. Sword stand is not included.

  • Blade forged from T10 carbon steel with a visible hamon line and full-tang construction, finished by hand for a refined edge that spans the full 21.65-inch overall length.
  • Clay-tempered blade process produces a distinct hamon pattern along the edge, reflecting light with a wave-like contrast that is a hallmark of traditional Japanese sword craft.
  • Deep red hardwood saya finished in piano lacquer and hand-painted with a detailed dragon motif in white and gold - each piece shows individual artisan brushwork.
  • Gold-toned copper tsuba features a dragon theme with etched relief detailing; the fuchi and kashira carry matching gold hardware that ties the full koshirae together.
  • Handle wrapped in red cord over real white samegawa (rayskin), providing a firm grip surface with the traditional diamond-pattern wrap associated with authentic Japanese mountings.
  • Black sageo cord ties to the saya and completes the koshirae-style presentation; overall weight is 1.54 lb with a blade width of 1.259 in at the base.

Frequently Asked Questions

What steel and heat treatment does this tanto use?
The blade is forged from T10 carbon steel and clay-tempered, producing a genuine hamon line along the edge. The process differentiates edge hardness from spine flexibility across the full-tang blade, which measures 1.259 in wide at the base.
How is the dragon design applied to the saya?
The saya is hardwood finished in red piano lacquer, then hand-painted with a dragon scene using white, gold, and teal pigments. Details include scales, claws, and cloud elements - each piece shows individual brushwork rather than a printed or decal finish.
What hardware colors are used across the koshirae fittings?
The tsuba, fuchi, and kashira are all finished in gold-toned copper, creating a consistent metal palette. The sageo cord is black, the handle wrap is red over white rayskin, and the saya is deep red lacquer - the full koshirae uses a red and gold color scheme throughout.
