Frequently Asked Questions

What creates the red finish on a red tanto sword scabbard or blade?
Red finishes on tanto swords can be created through two different methods depending on whether the color is on the scabbard or the blade itself. Scabbard red finishes are achieved through lacquering: the wooden scabbard is coated with multiple layers of lacquer in the desired red tone, ranging from deep crimson to vivid red, and polished to create the even, smooth surface characteristic of Japanese lacquerwork. Blade red finishes are typically created through a chemical treatment or heat-based oxidation process applied to the steel surface after the blade has been fully forged, hardened, and polished. Heat-based coloring produces oxide compounds on the steel surface at specific temperature ranges, creating colors including reds and purples depending on the temperature reached. Chemical coatings can also produce stable red surface colors on steel. In all cases, the red treatment is applied as a final step after the core blade construction - forging, heat treatment, and grinding - is complete, meaning the underlying blade quality is not affected by the color treatment.
What steel grades are used in red tanto swords?
Red tanto swords in this collection are built from several high-carbon steel grades appropriate to quality Japanese short blade collecting. Damascus steel pieces combine the fold-forged layered blade patterning with red scabbard finishes - the Damascus patterns and the bold red color create a particularly rich visual combination for display. 1090 high-carbon steel is a premium grade used in several red tanto pieces: with approximately 0.90% carbon content, 1090 steel is among the higher-carbon options available and produces a blade with refined edge character and surface quality. Damascus steel in an aikuchi tanto configuration - the minimalist guardless format - with a red scabbard is one of the most visually striking pieces in the collection. All steel grades used in this collection are high-carbon rather than stainless, confirming that proper heat treatment has been applied to produce a blade with genuine hardness rather than a purely decorative construction.
What tanto styles are available in the red tanto collection?
The red tanto collection includes several distinct style configurations within the Japanese short blade tradition. Standard tanto pieces follow the most recognized format: a single-edged blade with the characteristic angular Japanese tanto tip, a tsuba guard, wrapped handle, and red lacquered scabbard. Aikuchi tanto are a particularly notable style in the collection - the guardless profile creates a smooth transition between blade and handle that has an elegant minimal aesthetic, and the deep red scabbard finish gives the aikuchi format a color-forward visual character very different from the conventional fitting-heavy tanto appearance. Bladed pieces with red coloring on the blade itself rather than only on the scabbard are also available, creating an even more dramatic visual statement where the entire visible blade surface carries the bold red treatment alongside matching red fittings. The range of red tones across the collection - from deep crimson to vivid red - allows collectors to select the specific shade that best suits their display environment.
How do I display a red tanto sword to best show the finish?
A red tanto sword displays most effectively against a background that provides color contrast with the red finish rather than competing with it. Neutral backgrounds in white, cream, light gray, and natural wood tones all provide effective contrast that allows the red color to read clearly and vividly from across the room. Dark backgrounds in charcoal or black can also work well, creating a dramatic high-contrast arrangement that emphasizes the richness of the red tone. Avoid displaying against brightly colored backgrounds in orange, pink, or other warm tones that would blend with or dilute the red finish visually. For lighting, warm-temperature light sources - incandescent bulbs or warm-white LED - bring out the depth and richness of red lacquer more effectively than cool white or daylight-temperature sources. A directed spotlight or track light positioned to illuminate the tanto from above or at an angle enhances the three-dimensional quality of the lacquer finish and makes the color appear more vivid and saturated from across the room.

I thought my product was made in Japan… Looks like made in China… good thing blade sharp display doesn’t look bad except handle has wood piece that’s light brown that doesn’t match black they could’ve dyed it. Def worth more around $50-$90 not $150. The little wood part on sword handle bothers me they should’ve dyed it black to blend it in. Other than that honestly it’s just okay and don’t think it was worth the $150

T10 Carbon Steel Tanto with Red Saya, Dragon Motif & Gold Dragon Tsuba T10 Carbon Steel Tanto with Red Saya, Dragon Motif & Gold Dragon Tsuba

I've ordered 6 swords from Truekatana. This picture represents a Chinese Straight Sword and Chinese Broadsword I purchsed. I'm not a metalurgist, forgemaster or swordmaster. I learned a little Shao lin and wu shu broadsword in my youth, but that's about it. All that said these swords are truly functional, beautifully balanced and of exquisite workmanship. Besides being weapons they are beautiful works of art. I like to collect swords of all types and these two are among the most expensive I've bought, both being in the $1000 range. They are also, by far, the nicest.
I've also bought two katanas and two wakizashi. Though I did not venture into the same price range, they are truly viable weapons and beautiful art pieces.
Truekatana has truly exceptional pieces, fully functional as well as beautiful to behold. They are worth every penny and if you wait for a sale you will likely find something you like at a better than fair price.
