Melaleuca steel is the material that separates this tanto from everything else in TrueKatana's collection. Also known as pattern-welded or multi-layer steel, melaleuca is created by folding and forge-welding multiple layers of steel together, producing the distinctive wavy grain pattern visible along the blade surface. Each fold doubles the layer count, and the final result is a blade where the internal structure is literally written on the surface. No two melaleuca blades look identical because the folding pattern is determined by the smith's hand during forging. The red hardwood scabbard is the visual anchor of this piece. The red hardwood scabbard is the visual anchor of this piece. Most tanto in TrueKatana's catalog come with black or brown scabbards designed to blend in. This red scabbard does the opposite. It turns the tanto from a shelf item into a display centerpiece, and the contrast between the red lacquered wood and the silver-toned patterned blade creates a color relationship that references traditional Japanese aesthetics where red and steel are paired for ceremonial significance.

The copper tsuba adds a third material tone to the composition. Copper develops a natural patina over time, meaning the guard will gradually shift from bright copper to a deeper, warmer brown. This aging process is considered desirable among collectors because it gives each piece a unique character that reflects its history. Combined with the white ray-skin wrap and black cord handle, the material palette runs copper, white, black, red, and patterned steel - five distinct textures and tones in a single compact piece.

Positioned in TrueKatana's premium tier, this tanto reflects the additional labor required for melaleuca steel forging compared to single-steel blades, plus the copper fittings and red lacquered scabbard. For collectors building a curated display, this tanto serves as the high-end accent piece alongside more moderately priced katana and wakizashi.

Includes red hardwood scabbard. Stand not included. Free shipping and 30-day money-back guarantee.

This Saya is flawless and beautiful. The blade is light and elegant and the pattern steel is stunning to look at everything is tight and flush and the cord on the Saya is two tone of a thick high quality, there is a slight difference in the grinds on the blade, but this is definitely one of my favorites.

Excellent little weapon. Well crafted, everything is tight and fits well. Very light weight for the quality. No rattling in the Saya. The blade is very sharp. This is exactly what I wanted in a tanto. Way to go!
