Clay Tempered T10 Steel Tanto with Red Damascus Blade and Floral Gold Tsuba in Red Lacquer Saya

This tanto features a clay tempered T10 folded steel blade that produces a striking red-toned Damascus pattern across its 12.5-inch nagasa. The folding process creates visible layered grain throughout the steel, while the clay tempering method yields a natural hamon line along the edge. Heat treated to 62 HRC, the blade holds a hand-finished edge with a deep, warm color that shifts under different lighting.

The 6.3-inch tsuka is constructed with a full tang core wrapped in black polyurethane leather samegawa, then bound with black cotton ito in a traditional crosshatch pattern. The wrap sits snug against the handle, providing both visual contrast and a secure grip. Copper-toned fuchi and kashira cap each end of the handle with clean, fitted lines.

At the center of the fittings sits a gold-tone alloy tsuba cast in an elaborate chrysanthemum motif. Each petal is sculpted in high relief with openwork detailing between the floral clusters, giving the guard a bold three-dimensional presence that pairs naturally with other pieces in the Red Tanto collection.

The hardwood saya is finished in a piano lacquer with a distinctive red and white speckled texture that resembles natural stone. A black braided sageo wraps neatly around the kurikata, and the saya mouth fits the blade with a firm, satisfying click. The 13-inch scabbard completes the visual pairing with the red blade tones.

Overall this tanto measures 20.5 inches in length and weighs 1.5 lbs, making it a substantial yet balanced piece. It ships at approximately 2 lbs in a 24-inch protective package.
